What is the GRADE research study? (  GRADE UNC

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, in collaboration with 37 medical clinics, including UNC Diabetes Care Center, is conducting a study to determine the best combination drug treatment for type 2 diabetes. People who take part will all take metformin and will be randomly assigned (like a coin flip) to take one additional diabetes drug.

How long would I participate in the study?

Visits will be scheduled every 3 months for up to 7 years.

Will I receive anything for participating?

You will receive glucose testing equipment, diabetes medication, and diabetes care from a team of diabetes experts at no cost

Do I qualify to participate?

You may qualify if you:
• Are an adult ≥30 years of age with diabetes for < 5 years
• Are only taking metformin for your diabetes
• Are willing to take a second diabetes drug
• Can speak and read in English or Spanish
• HbA1c between 6.8 and 8.5%
